Architectural Design & Archaeology in the Capital City

In celebration of Frankfort Heritage Week – May 16-22, 2021

PART 1: “Is it Colonial or Foursquare?: Identifying and Describing Historic Residential Buildings” presented by Vicki Birenberg, City Historic Presentation Officer. Ms. Birenberg will explain common methods used to describe historic residential properties, characteristics of various architectural styles associated with them, and the timeline of styles commonly found in the United States. Given the rich architectural heritage of Kentucky, and Frankfort in particular, she will sprinkle local examples throughout her presentation.

PART 2: “Archaeology in the Capital City” presented by Nicole Konkol, archaeologist and chair of the City of Frankfort ’s Architectural Review Board. Ms. Konkol will discuss a few documented archaeological sites in the downtown area, talk about what archaeological features are most likely to exist intact in Frankfort, share citizens’ comments on cultural resources that are special to them, and provide information on how you can be a good steward of Frankfort’s archaeological resources. This presentation will be pre-recorded and posted to the City of Frankfort’s Facebook page.
