Cob Method Small Scale Sculptures Workshop with Remi
August 7, 2020 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Come get your hands in the mud and make some sculpture with JSP Artist in Residence, Tara (Remi) Remington! This workshop will bring community together in a small group of ten to explore a nature-based sustainable art practice using the cob method of building with earthen materials. Each participant will learn how to mix the cob materials to form realistic or abstract sculptures based on the natural world. A small limestone base will be provided. During the process of mixing and building with cob, a shared positive social experience and community connection will also be made.
We will begin the workshop with a walk around Josephine Sculpture Park to observe and be inspired by other sculptures, including the site and construction of Remi’s sculpture, TerraHand. We will begin our art practice with a mindful meditation moment – taking a moment to remember our connection to the earth with mindful breathing and centering. Then, we will use the cob method to build personal small scale sculptures. Participants will also be encouraged to add a portion of their cob mixture to the TerraHand as part of a closing ceremony.
Please bring a chair or blanket, and a mask and gloves (any washable or vinyl gloves work fine) to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19. We will maintain a 6ft social distance outdoors during the workshop. This is a HANDS-ON workshop, so please wear clothes you do not mind getting muddy. You may also want to bring water, a snack, sunscreen, and insect repellant.
