Martin Himler: Immigrant; Kentuckian; American

Food for Thought: Immigrant families have shaped Kentucky from its earliest days. Martin Himler, a Hungarian immigrant who embraced life in Eastern Kentucky, founded successful businesses and served his adopted country with distinction in the OSS during World War II.

Copies of Himler’s “The Making of an American: the Autobiography of a Hungarian Immigrant, Appalachian Entrepreneur, and OSS Officer,” will be available for purchase. Royalties from book sales will support the restoration of Himler’s Martin County home as a possible U.S. National Landmark.

Speakers: Cathy Corbin is an editor and co-coordinator of the Himler Project. She edited and annotated Himler’s autobiography. Dr. Doug Cantrell is a professor of history at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College. He wrote an introduction for the book.

Cost: $35; KHS members $30.

Reservations and prepayment are required by 5 p.m. on Friday, June 21. To make a reservation call 502-782-8118. No refunds for reservations canceled after that time.

Menu: Buffet lunch and dessert included. Parmesan Crusted Chicken, Red Skin Potatoes. Southern Style Green Beans, Salad, Rolls. Beverages choices include Iced Tea, Water, & Coffee. Dessert is Pound Cake with Fresh Berries.

Sometimes you just need to talk to someone who understands and knows what it’s like to have an ancestor who eludes you, questions about the right source to use next, what genealogy terms like “proof standard” mean or how to involve the next generation in family history.

Join us for a group discussion every fifth Saturday of the month and bring your questions or challenges. Even if we can’t offer a solution, we promise to provide lots of tea and sympathy!

All research levels welcome – let’s learn from each other’s experiences!
