In 1887, Colonel Edmond Haynes Taylor Jr. built a distillery inspired by European architecture. The site featured a castle, classical spring house, and a sunken garden. The Old Taylor Distillery, unsurprisingly so, became the birthplace of bourbon Tourism.

In 2014, the ruins of the once grand location were bought, restored, and became Castle & Key Distillery.

“Taking up Colonel Taylor’s sensibilities for excellence, we source local ingredients to inspire our product. We make everything that we sell from carefully selected grains. We choose to do things the thoughtful way – even though it’s not the easy way – because waiting to sell the spirits we make is worth it.”

Castle & Key, part of the Bourbon Trail, offers admittance on to the grounds at no cost, hosts various tour experiences, seasonal live music (Spring House Music Series), and weddings, have a bar on the property, and own a beautifully designed rental property in the heart of historic downtown Frankfort.
