Frankfort is Home to one of the Few Remaining Covered Bridges in Kentucky Switzer Covered Bridge

“Just before World War II, covered bridges — also called kissing bridges — could be found all over Kentucky, spanning rivers and creeks. Now, only 11 remain.” – Aaron Mudd, Lexington Herald Leader

One of these bridges, Switzer Covered Bridge, is located here in Frankfort, Kentucky. Built by George Hockersmith, the historic Switzer Covered Bridge is a 120 foot long Howe truss design built in 1855 and restored in 1906 and again in 1990. On March 1, 1997 the bridge was washed away.  Each entrance has a saw tooth edge. Rebuilt in 1998, the bridge is on the National Historic Register. The bridge is now closed to vehicular traffic, but remains open to pedestrians. Learn more about visiting the bridge here.
